What is GPS and how can it be used?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and was originally designed to be used by the U.S. military and operated by the Department of Defense. This system consists of 24 satellites, these satellites are 12,000 miles above us, are constantly in motion in a precise orbit, have an atomic clock, and is operated by solar energy. They have a battery backup if it will continue to operate in the case of a solar eclipse satellites, each with a small rocket to maintain its orbit. The first satellite was launched in 1978 and was not until 1994, when there were a total of 24 satellites. Each satellite has a lifespan of about 10 years, as new satellites are constantly built and launched. Each satellite weighs about 2,000 pounds and measuring about 17 feet wide when the solar panels deployed. In the 1980s, the GPS became publicly available, and even if it is still maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense There is no charge for use by the public.

These 24 satellites orbiting the earth twice a day and constantly sends the position of the satellite. A GPS system can tell how far a satellite by comparing the time difference between when a signal is transmitted and when it was received, the longer it takes the signal is received by a receiver as far as the satellite. If one receives GPS signals from three satellites to calculate latitude and longitude. Altitude can be determined if the GPS receiving signals from four satellites.

GPS can be used to navigate your car through traffic and daily monitoring of a fleet of vehicles. Not only can you use a driver for a GPS to get to the office knows that the vehicle and the vehicle speed. GPS can be used during the holiday activities such as hiking, camping or hunting. Is it his passion, but feel frustrated fishing try to find the fish? With a fish finder which uses both GPS and sonar to know exactly where to fish. The GPS technology is also used as a way to keep your pet company if it wanders off or to save a pet to be stolen.

Another use of GPS as a form of child with a receptor on a cell phone or wristwatch child to ensure the safety of a child. Can be used in a car teen we both know where and how fast it is driving. This could also be used to keep track of someone who tends to "wander" but not quite able to find the way back is someone who has Alzheimer's disease.

As GPS technology improves, use will increase. Who knows where we take the next?
